Interview with Melissa Groeling

Hey, everyone!
 I'm pleased to have Author Melissa Groeling here on my blog today, for an interview. Below are a couple questions I have asked Melissa (questions = highlighted in black and blue) and her answers to them (answers = purple color).  
       I met Melissa about a month ago and she is one amazing lady! You should definitely check her out. I'll have some info on her towards the end. 

But I'll just let Melissa do the talking for now. 
1.What's your author name? Do you have multiple?

In order to keep things simple, I stick with one name and one name only: Melissa Groeling :)

2. What do you write about?

 I write about whatever pops into my mind. I know, it’s a vague answer, right? But seriously. I can’t sit down and say, “Okay, I want to write about purple cats and three-legged iguanas who team up to fight a slew of warlocks.” My ideas have to literally come from nowhere. It makes the writing process much more fun.

3. Who is your targeted audience?

Anyone willing to get their heart rate going!

4. Who/What inspired you with the idea of your first book?

Traffic Jam came to me while I was watching MSNBC.com which is kind of hysterically weird because I never watch the news…especially while on vacation, which is exactly where I was when I got the idea! It was the perfect story line for Val and Sam, the two main characters, who were kicking around in my head for a long time before Traffic Jam was even born.

5. Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that

particular image/artwork?

I love this cover! My cousin’s husband, Joey, designed it for me. He was so good about taking the pretty vague instructions I gave him and creating something completely awesome. I remember telling him that I didn’t want any full-on faces on the cover. I always find that takes away from the reader’s imagination when it comes to imagining what the characters look like. So he gave me part of a face and the tear coming down was the perfect touch of misery.

6. Who is your favorite character from your book and why?

As much as I love Val, I find myself torn between John and Jude. The two of them are completely misunderstood. They stand for something so much greater than what people see on the surface. The loyalty John has for his friends is so unheard of nowadays and Jude’s willingness to give up so much to stop what was going on, says oodles about his strength and character.

 7 .How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

Hmmm…least favorite? That’s an interesting question. Let’s see…I’d have to say Brandon. To me, he embodies all the guys in high school who thought everyone was there for his own sick enjoyment. He was surprisingly easy to write because I knew a lot of guys like that and I’m sure it hasn’t changed any, has it?

8. Would you ever go back and change something about your first book?

No! I can’t! Seriously, if I change one thing then that leads to another thing, and then another and then another and before you know, the entire story is different. So to save my own sanity, I can’t change anything! lol

9. Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book or series:

Everything Val and Sam’s dad does is totally something my dad would do. If my sisters, my brother or I were getting in trouble at school, he would not have a problem marching us to school in front of everyone! There’s no room for embarrassment with my dad, I’ll tell you. Looking back, it’s pretty funny but when you’re in the moment…not so much.

10. What other books are similar to your own?  What makes them alike?

Honestly, I can’t think of any other books that are similar. Can you? Let me know if you think of any and I’ll check them out.

11. Do you have any unique talents or hobbies? I'll let you brag for a moment.

Heh heh. Did I ever tell you what a book nerd I am? Or how much I hate shopping? Or how much I love playing chess even though I’m no good at it? And I’m loud. Is being loud a talent? If it’s not, it should be. :)

12. Are you self published or do you have a publisher?

I do have a publisher—Black Opal Books. They’re really a great support system and very easy to talk to and work with, which is important when you’re pouring your heart out onto a page.

13. What book is your ABSOLUTE favorite?

Summer of Night by Dan Simmons, hands down. I’ve read that book at least 3 times and I’m sure I’ll be reading it again. The spine is so cracked, the pages will probably start coming out!

14. If you could sit on a bench with any author, alive or dead, who would it be?

Wow, that is such a good question. Let’s see…I’d say Mary Shelley. Who wouldn’t want to sit next to someone who created one of the most famous and saddest monsters in human history?

Q1.When did you start writing? And when did you become an author? I started writing in high school but didn't actually write my first book until December of 2011.

Q2. When was your first book released? This summer, in June.

Q3. Do you have more books that you have written? Yes! I have The Station Series - two books have been published, as well as an anthology piece in 'Once Upon A Twisted Time'.

Q4. When you were younger did you like to write? Of course!

Q5. Is there a certain thing you do before writing your books? I set up a music play list and make sure that I pick a spot out in my 5 subject notebook for where I am going to put my sticky notes. Eventually I transfer that stuff onto the computer, but the notebook makes the experience feel more organic.

Q6. How long did it take you to write a book? My first book took me four months. The second took about eight weeks, if memory serves me right, but it was only 40,000 words long. All of my work has been different lengths so I guess there is no average - yet. 

Q7.How many books have you read? And did you like to read when you were younger? There is no way I could even attempt to answer this question without my brain exploding! I have gone through phases in my life - the cheesy romance book phase, the horror phase, the action/suspense phase, the young adult phase...and basically I will read everything I can get my hands on in each of those phases. LOL I have always enjoyed reading - even in school.

Q8.Do you have another author or person or even place who/that gives you inspiration? My children are my inspiration, but aside from them, yes I do have other writer friends who help me along the way. I think that any writer needs a support system - if not, you will get overwhelmed rather quickly. I could not have done as much this year if I didn't have some great women around me!

Q9. Do you write everyday? On average - yes. I have not written much over the last week, as I had a new release coming out and it takes a lot of time to focus on making the launch go off without a hitch! I look forward to getting back into my writing routine so that I can pick up where I left off at. Normally I get 1,500-2,500 words in at a time. 

Q10. How did you get your book published? I am an Indie Author/Indie Publisher. I do it all myself - but at the same time - I am not alone. I have a wonderful friend that has helped me with my book covers, since I am not a designer or media person. I have had help with editing and Beta Readers and criticism all across the board. I created my own publishing name, and I do that part on my own. It's exciting, but at the same time a bit scary - the success or failure of my books rides solely on MY shoulders. I respect that. It keeps me grounded and pushing forward.

Q1.When did you start writing? And when did you become an author?

I started writing as a teenager, but changes in life pushed it to the background.  It wasn't until about 5 years ago, I rediscovered my passion.

Q2. When was your first book released?

My first book, Ties that Bind (A Madison Knight Novel) released in May of 2011.

Q3. Do you have more books that you have written?

I have written 8 novels, 2 shorts, and 1 novella to date.  I have plans to write a lot more novels.  In fact, I hope to write another one before the new year.

Q4. When you were younger did you like to write?

I loved it and demanded that my family and friends let me read what I wrote to them.  I hear that some authors are shy about sharing what they've written, I never was.

Q5. Is there a certain thing you do before writing your books?

I don't outline but have an idea of where the story is going and who the main players are.  I have found interviewing the main characters before I start to be beneficial.  It allows me to know them intimately, which makes for terrific motivators during a plot.  I also find it whittles out any inclination to dump back story on the reader.  And, just because I know a background on a character doesn't even mean it will necessarily come out in the book.  It does define the character, however, whether it's "spelled out" or not.  This is essential for creating believable characters.

Q6. How long did it take you to write a book?

Talking first drafts..my first novel took me a year, the second six months, and the fastest I've written a novel was one and half months.

Q7.How many books have you read? And did you like to read when you were younger?

I have no way of knowing.  I liked to read then, but more so now.

Q8.Do you have another author or person or even place who/that  gives you inspiration?

Inspiration comes from anyone, anything, or anywhere.  I'm sorry to be so vague, but there is nothing specific I can share.

Q9. Do you write everyday?

When I'm working on a novel, yes.  Lately, I have been editing a lot. 

By extension, I do immerse myself in the craft, in one form or another every day.

Q10.How did you get your book published?

I self-published my books through Amazon both for Kindle and in print.

Q1.When did you start writing? And when did you become an author?

Oh my, I started writing as soon as I could read! :) But as far as seriously writing? I wrote my first novella length script when I was 12 and I've wanted to be an author ever since.

Q2. When was your first book released?

Devastation was released December of 2011! 

Q3. Do you have more books that you have written?

Ohhh yes!! Let me go count the finished scripts I have *danced to her files*  I have at LEAST 4 scripts that are finished and waiting revision so I can get them into your hands and about a dozen half written pieces that I'm sure I'll wrap back around to some day!

Q4. When you were younger did you like to write?

This one goes back to question one. YES! :) It's always been a passion of mine.

Q5. Is there a certain thing you do before writing your books?

Nothing :) I can start writing anywhere anytime, with a marker and paper, a pen, my lap top, doesn't matter. I don't have any special ritual. When something comes to mind I MUST find a way to get it to paper :)

Q6. How long did it take you to write a book?

Depends on the book. Devastation it took me about a year of actual writing but I stopped half way threw it and wrote an entirely different script and then came back to it. I do that a lot. My writing changes with my mood. But actually writing time, I would say a year. From start to finish, about 2 years. Isolation took me only 10 months! I'm not sure how because I was crazy busy with school and work over those 10 months and like Devastation I stopped halfway through and wrote another script haha. I see a trend starting. As for It Can Always Get Worse. That was written many many years ago and I have improved on it every Time I've picked it up over those many years.

Q7.How many books have you read? And did you like to read when you were younger?

I have no clue how many books I've read! A lot, but not as many as I'd like to! Yes, I loved to read when I was younger. I think the first series I remember being glued to was The Hardy Boys! Loved mystery when I was a kid. Not super into it now, but taste changes.

Q8.Do you have another author or person or even place who/that  gives you inspiration?

Every person I meet gives me inspiration. Just living gives me inspiration! It makes it possible to experiance the emotion my character feel.

Q9. Do you write everyday?

I would like to read everyday but do not always get the time for it. I would say I write at least five days a week, a little something anyway. I get cranky when I don't get to write, ask my hubby!

Q10.How did you get your book published?

At the moment I am indie which means I self-publish my books. Someday I might try out the traditional route. I do have beta readers and an editor that polishes it up but it's you readers who make my bigs go where they do! By word of mouth!!

When you were younger did you like to write?
Always. My first story was a rather dismal endeavor about a lonely pickle. My style has improved a
bit since then.

Do you have another author or person or even place who/that gives you inspiration?
I draw my inspiration from the world and all the awesome people in it. Earth is so beautiful and has
so many crazy creatures in it that I can’t help but marvel at it. I keep all of my favorite pictures on
my pinterest boards, so feel free to drop by and have a look. I also talk about a new

Do you write every day?
That’s the goal, but it’s not always possible. If I can’t write during the day because of other
obligations, I always daydream about new plot points and characters. In fact, I already know what
series I’ll start once I finish the Grimoire Trilogy.

 First up is an interview with A.D. Trosper!


 Q1.When did you start writing? And when did you become an author?

I wrote in little dabbles when I was in my early teens, but nothing I finished. It wasn't until much, much later after I married and had kids that I started writing a novel. My husband kept telling me I should. So, finally one day I decided I would write a book about dragons and so my journey in novel writing began. I took six years from start to finish. I had a baby in the middle of that and didn't get much written in the first two years after my youngest was born. The rest of the time was taken up with learning to write, learning the craft, taking criticism and learning some more.

When did I become an author? That one is more tricky. I have a published book out and have an author page on FB and family calls me an author, but am I an author yet? With only one book out? I'm not sure I can quite claim that title yet. 


Q2. When was your first book released? My first book was released in May of this year

Q3. Do you have more books that you have written? No, Embers at Galdrilene is my first, although I am working hard on the second in the trilogy.


Q4. When you were younger did you like to write? Some. Mostly I loved to read. I wrote some little stories here and there and loved making up characters in my head, but it wasn't anything I spent a lot of time at. When I was younger, my life revolved around my horses.


Q5. Is there a certain thing you do before writing your books? Plug in my headphones,lol. My writing space is in the living room of our small house. I tried writing without them, but with three kids I found it too hard to concentrate with a video game or Spongebob in the background.


Q6. How long did it take you to write a book? Like I said above, the first book took several years. The second book is moving along much faster.


Q7.How many books have you read? And did you like to read when you were younger? Oh my goodness, I couldn't even begin to count them. I have read so many across so many genres. My mother instilled a love of reading in me from the time I was very little.


Q8.Do you have another author or person or even place who/that gives you inspiration? My husband inspires me a lot. So do a lot of other things. I once saw the sun sinking below a line of thunderstorms. It was so beautiful and dramatic, it inspired a scene and even ended up in the book. Music also inspires me.


Q9. Do you write everyday? I wish,lol. No with three children, homeschooling them and everything else that needs done as a wife and mother, I don't write everyday. I do try to write several times a week though.


Q10.How did you get your book published? I decided to go the indie author route and so far I'm pretty happy with my decision.

Interview with E.K Henry!!

Whoo Hoo!!! One of my favorite authors is someone I get to interview! AMAZING!!!

Q1.When did you start writing? And when did you become an author? · I have always had an interest for writing. I wrote poetry growing up. I first started writing fiction on May 5, 2010. I finished one book by the end of 2010 and one novella by early 2011, and trunked them. For those of you who don’t know, that means I threw it in a desk, never to see the light of day again. I finished Freak by mid 2011. · After Freak was written, edited multiple times, and sent to many beta readers, I spent months trying to find a literary agent. I had quite a few that told me they loved Freak, but that they couldn’t sell it at the current time. Publisher’s weren’t really buying vampire books anymore, even though there was still a huge audience for the genre. I was devastated for a long time. I kept thinking, “How could someone love my book and still not take me on as a client?” · After much consideration and encouragement from people who’ve read Freak, I decided to self-publish it. This in its self presented its own set of challenges. · I am glad that I made the choice though because it has been an amazing experience so far. I have had so many people purchase my book and then contact to tell me that they enjoyed reading it. To me, that is the best feeling in the world.

Q2. When was your first book released? · May 2012

Q3. Do you have more books that you have written? · I do have more books that I have written, but they have not been published. Since writing Freak I have been working on several novellas and a sequel to Freak.

Q4. When you were younger did you like to write? · I did but not as much as I loved to read. When I was younger, I loved writing poetry, but it wasn’t until a fews ago that I started writing fiction.

Q5. Is there a certain thing you do before writing your books? · Before I ever start writing a book, I like to jot down all of my ideas and then build an outline. Sometimes I follow the outline pretty well, other times my characters take the story into their own hands and take a different direction than I had planned. · I don’t have a set ritual when it comes to writing. Sometimes, I listen to music. Sometimes I drink coffee to get my muse to surface. I am not strict on my ritual, but I do prefer to write outdoors.

Q6. How long did it take you to write a book? · Well, the first draft took me about ½ a year to write. Editing and revisions took about another ½ a year.

Q7.How many books have you read? And did you like to read when you were younger? · I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many books I’ve read. I did like to read when I was younger. I used to read just about anything I could get my hands on. Stephen King was my idol growing up.

Q8.Do you have another author or person or even place who/that gives you inspiration? · I have to say Stephen King has always been my inspiration. I have spent more hours than I can count lost in his twisted tales. I’d love to do a remake of Misery one day · Another author who has influenced me and actually inspired me to write a book was Stephenie Meyer. What influenced me was that she was just a normal person who woke up with a dream and decided to pursue it. I’m not saying that she’s the only author who did this, but I discovered this about her at a point in my life when it made a big impact. I was trying to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life. When I read an interview she did, it got me thinking. If she could do it, why can’t I. I sat down that night and started writing. I haven’t stopped since. I owe her so much for influencing me in such a big way.

Q9. Do you write everyday? · I always make an attempt to. It might just be 200 words during my lunch break, but those 200 words add up.

Interview with John.D.Ayers!!

So I am interviewing author John.D.Ayers and here we go! Q1.When did you start writing? And when did you become an author?  I started writing when I was young, at about 14 years old.  I was a voracious reader and started writing short stories when I was a kid.    In college I wrote and published story stories and articles for magazines.   I have a life bucket list (created well before the movie came out J )…  on it was ‘write a novel’    So, about 4 years ago I decided to sit down and do it.   Wrote my first novel and enjoyed it so much I started a second one right away.   Finished that one and then slightly switched genres.    I have published a book each year for the past three years and have already started the fourth one.  It’s a wonderful hobby.   

Q2. When was your first book released?  June 2010.

Q3. Do you have more books that you have written?  I have a paranormal mystery based in Greece that is half written that I will probably go back to sometime in the future.  I have 40% of my new Darcy novel written already.

Q4. When you were younger did you like to write?   I loved to write when I was younger.   Loved to read anything I could get my hands on.  Was always at the library.

Q5. Is there a certain thing you do before writing your books?  No…I just start writing..  I have a basic idea but don’t flesh out the story in full.   Things just come to me as I’m writing.   About halfway through the book I realize how it’s going to end. 

Q6. How long did it take you to write a book?  My first two books each took a year to write.  My third novel took my 4 months.  J  Guess I’m getting better at it. J

Q7.How many books have you read? And did you like to read when you were younger?   I read about a book per week.  All authors, all genres.   Love to read..  It’s a perfect escape.    I’ve been reading constantly since I was like 12.

Q8.Do you have another author or person or even place who/that  gives you inspiration?  There are so many.   Sharon Lathan, John Grisham, and tons of others.

Q9. Do you write everyday?  No… sadly, I still have a day job..  I write for fun.. sometimes every day, and sometimes weeks go by without writing a word.

Q10. How did you get your book published?   Online at first at lulu.com.  Now I use createspace.com.   Also direct to amazon kdp and pubit for B&N.

Interview With Regina Pucket!!!

I had an interview with Regina Pucket and here I go!

Q1.When did you start writing? And when did you become an author?

I didn’t get serious about writing until 1975. At that time I was a stay at home mom and it seemed like a great time to try my hand at writing my first romance.  My first novel wasn’t published until 2006.

Q2. When was your first book released?

Concealed in my Heart was released on March 13, 2006.

Q3. Do you have more books that you have written?

I have five published sweet romances, five short horror stories, 2 children’s picture books and two short inspirational stories.

Q4. When you were younger did you like to write?

I didn’t get into writing until the seventh grade.  Back then I was fearless so I tried writing a little bit of everything.

Q5. Is there a certain thing you do before writing your books?

I write a cheat sheet for character names, appearances and a little back story for each person.  I discovered early on if I didn’t do this I would have to go through the entire manuscript to find an eye color or someone’s name.

Q6. How long did it take you to write a book? 

It just depends if I get writer’s block in the middle of writing the story.  If things go well, it usually takes me around three to four months to finish a full length novel.  My last romance took me two years because I kept getting stuck around chapter six.  I had to redo it from the beginning six times.  It only takes me a couple of weeks to do a short story.

Q7.How many books have you read? And did you like to read when you were younger?

I can’t remember a time I didn’t love to read.  I have no idea how many books I have read over the years.  I obsessed with reading so if I fall in love with the characters I can’t put it down until I know how it’s going to end.

Q8.Do you have another author or person or even place who/that  gives you inspiration?

I never know where my next inspiration is coming from.  Anything can set me to thinking, what if?

Q9. Do you write every day?

I don’t write every day.  I never want writing to become a chore or something I have to do.  There are too many other things in my life that fall into that category. A writer shouldn’t dread getting up in the morning and thinking they have to write today.

Q10. How did you get your book published?

My first books I submitted and submitted until I finally found a publisher willing to give me a chance.  This year I decided to take charge of my own destiny and go Indie.  I’m enjoying the freedom of making all of the major decisions for myself. Interview With Lauren-Baratz-Logsted

Well right now I have Lauren-Baratz-Logsted here with me and our little interview is starting!!! Here we go!!!

Q1.When did you start writing? And when did you become an author?

I started writing seriously, in the hopes of completing a novel, in 1994 when I left my day job of 11 years as an independent bookseller.

Q2. When was your first book released?

In 2003, The Thin Pink Line, a dark comedy for adults about a woman who fakes an entire pregnancy, was published.

Q3. Do you have more books that you have written?

My 25 book was published today. I've written for adults, teens and young children, in almost every genre imaginable.

Q4. When you were younger did you like to write?

Yes. I first got the idea that I might have some talent when, at the age of 12, a teacher fell in love with one of my stories and made my eighth grade class listen to it read three days running.

Q5. Is there a certain thing you do before writing your books?

No. I have no one process that I repeat from book to book. If the book takes place in a previous time period, like the Victorian suspense novel The Twin's Daughter, I may do some research in advance or I may do it as I go along. Sometimes I outline; sometimes I don't. Basically, each time I write a book, unless it's part of a series I'm reinventing my wheel again.

Q6. How long did it take you to write a book?

It depends on the book. Bigger novels like The Twin's Daughter took months. One book in The Sisters 8 series for young readers, approximately 120 pages long, took just four days for the first draft.

Q7.How many books have you read? And did you like to read when you were younger?

I come from a family of big readers so I've always read a lot. I couldn't begin to count how many books in my lifetime but a tpical year would be 100-250. One New Year's Eve, I resolved to read 365 books the next year and I did.

Q8.Do you have another author or person or even place who/that  gives you inspiration?

My daughter. She's always been proud of what I do for a living. She's 2 now and I hope when she's fully grown, she's still proud.

Q9. Do you write everyday?

It used to be, if I was working on a novel, I'd write every single day until it was completed. Now I'm more likely to write just Monday to Friday, but that's from 7am to 4pm each day, so I'm not a total slacker yet.

Q10. How did you get your book published?

I would actually need to write a whole book to answer that question! The short version: It took me nearly eight years, seven novels written, and several agents before I sold my debut novel on my own as part of a two-book deal. Since, as stated above, I've had 25 books published to date, I like to think the wait was worth it.
